Why Use Physical Sunscreen?

A lot of people are unaware that there are two types of sunscreen: chemical and physical. Each works in very different ways and have their own benefits. Although most sunscreens are chemical sunscreens, there are very good reasons why you should consider using a physical sunscreen: they are usually more gentle on the skin, cause less pore-clogging, and provide long-lasting protection.

Chemical sunscreens use chemicals such as oxybenzone to absorb the sun rays. This means that the UVA UVB rays do enter the skin, but are absorbed by the sunscreen before they can cause damage to your cells. Physical sunscreens work very differently: they use minerals such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that sit on top of the skin to deflect the sunlight.

Although chemical sunscreen is usually more easily spread on the skin and less often leaves a white cast, some scientists are concerned about the effects of oxybenzone on our health, especially on the health of pregnant and nursing women. Also, chemical sunscreens and their main ingredient (oxybenzone) are often named as one of the major causes of the destruction of coral reefs.

Physical sunscreens are generally safer for your skin and as they sit on top of it, cause less irritation and pore-clogging. They also last longer than chemical sunscreens when hit with direct UV light, but have as a con that they do rub off easily when sweating. Also, many physical sunscreens can leave a white film on the skin, making them less suitable for people with medium to dark skin tones. However, the AXIS-Y Complete No-Stress Physical Sunscreen is specially formulated to minimize any white cast.

Pros & Cons

I personally really liked the AXIS-Y Complete No-Stress Physical Sunscreen. Although I did have to get used to using a physical sunscreen, I am totally sold and will never go back to using chemical sunscreen. These are our pros and cons:

  • Long-lasting protection from the sun, both UVA and UVB rays.
  • It is SPF50+, PA++++, and ISO internationally certified.
  • Surprisingly lightweight. It does not clog pores or cause any irritation.
  • Cruelty-free and vegan.
  • Does not contain any chemicals that damage coral reefs.

  • Physical sunscreens rub off when you get wet. So if you have worked out, or if you took a swim or are just sweaty on a hot day, you have to reapply it.
  • You have to shake the tube before using it to properly mix all ingredients.

Complete Axis-Y Sunscreen Review

AXIS-Y Complete No-Stress Physical Sunscreen was developed using the 6+1+1 Advanced Formula, meaning it contains 6 natural extracts, 1 core ingredient, and 1 patented technology. Let’s take a deeper look at this product!

1. Purpose

This sunscreen was created to provide total sun protection, without harming the environment. Since 2015, a fifth of the world’s coral reefs have died and there is a risk of losing another 40% over the next 30 years. Ingredients found in chemical sunscreens contribute to coral reef degradation so AXIS-Y set out to create an environment-friendly sunscreen that is sensitive to the skin and does not cause acne or blemishes.

The sunscreen is based on mugwort, which is anti-inflammatory, and contains 2% niacinamide and squalane, which help soothe the skin. It also provides broad-spectrum sun protection (SPF 50+), does not leave an oily residue, and has minimal white cast. As this sunscreen was formulated as part of the 611 line, it is a great choice for people with oily or acne-prone skin.

2. Ingredients

As part of the 611 line, the AXIS-Y Complete No-Stress Physical Sunscreen contains 6 natural base ingredients, 1 core ingredient, and 1 special technology.

The core ingredient is mugwort, which helps to cool the skin and thus is great for sensitive skin or skin that is prone to redness. It has anti-inflammatory properties as well and improves radiance and elasticity.

The 6 base ingredients are:

  • Calendula: Anti-inflammatory, helps the skin heal so often used to treat burns and wounds.
  • Grape: Forms a protective film over the skin, so vital for a physical sunscreen. A
  • Green Tea: Helps soothe irritated and inflamed skin and is anti-inflammatory.
  • Chamomile: Soothes skin irritation caused by sun exposure.
  • Squalane: Natural emollient that fights off free radicals, like UV rays, which cause damage to your skin,
  • Allantoin: Helps fight against premature aging and makes skin smoother.

The patented technology used in this product is called SYN-COLL. SYN-COLL promotes collagen synthesis, protects collagen against stress, and promotes the synthesis of hyaluronic acid. According to AXIS-Y, you can see healthier skin in as fast as 4 weeks thanks to this patented technology.

You can read the full ingredient list below:

The AXIS-Y sunscreen ingredients are marked as completely safe by CosDNA.

3. Texture & Smell

This sunscreen does not have a strong scent. There is a light, typical sunscreen scent to it, but it is hardly noticeable after application.

The sunscreen itself is very lightweight and spreads easily. Although it is so lightweight, make sure to apply it generously to ensure the best sun protection.

5. Packaging

I really like AXIS-Y’s packaging: it is very minimalistic, chic, and suits their brand so well. The AXIS-Y Complete No-Stress Physical Sunscreen comes in tubes of 50 mL / 1.69 fl oz. The tubes are white with some green and red highlights. I love how you can clearly see the main ingredients on the tube as well. The tube cap allows it to stand upside down, meaning it’ll be easier to get the cream out of the tube. Be aware that the nozzle is quite small, so only a small amount of cream comes out.

6. Personal Review

Before trying the AXIS-Y sunscreen I was using Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence and the Klairs Mid Day Blue UV Shield. Both of these sunscreens are vegan and cruelty-free as well. I definitely prefer the texture and scent of the AXIS-Y sunscreen over the sunscreens of Klairs. It is easier to spread, goes a long way and doesn’t leave any white cast. Price wise, they are very similar but Klairs sunscreen contains 80ml instead of 50 ml.

What I really appreciate about the AXIS-Y sunscreen is the dispensing nozzle. It is easy to control how much sunscreen comes out and the nozzle has a transparent plastic cap on it which makes it easy to see the sunscreen coming out.

The tube is the perfect size to carry around in your bag and to use as a top up sunscreen during the day.

How To Use Axis-Y Sunscreen

Wash your skin and apply any serums or moisturizers you like to use. Shake the tube slightly to mix the ingredients together. Apply a generous layer of sunscreen to your face, neck, ears, and decolletage. Make sure to reapply often during the day, especially after strenuous activity, sweating, or going into the water.
