Spanning across 138 hectares of land, this forest is a result of a massive reforestation project initiated in 1974 and concluded in 1995.

Over those two decades, more than 690,000 Birch trees were carefully planted to create a haven for wildlife and a place of beauty for all to behold. Each tree stands as a symbol of renewal and hope, transforming the once-charred landscape into a verdant and vibrant forest.

Exquisite Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival

Jinhae Gunhangje Festival is one of the most spectacular spring festivals in Korea, attracting approximately 2 million locals and tourists globally during the two-week blossom period. Every year, people throng the Jinhae district of Changwon city, situated in the southern part of Korea, in Jeollanam-do province, to witness the scenic display of cherry blossom trees. The grandeur of the festival magnetizes visitors from every nook and corner of the world, making it a global phenomenon.

Interestingly, the festival’s roots are traced back to a memorial service for renowned naval admiral Yi Sun-sin. He was a celebrated figure recognized for his significant wins over Japan during the Imjin War and the invention of the turtle ship. What started as a humble tribute later morphed into an iconic cherry blossom festival recognized worldwide.

Key Locations to Enjoy Cherry Blossoms

Cherry blossom trees are a common sight throughout Jinhae, literally peppering the streets with their blooms. However, there are two eminent photography spots:

YeoJwacheon Stream (romance bridge)

Gyeonghwa Station

Unfortunately, these attractions are located at a significant distance from each other.

YeoJwacheon Stream: A Bridge to Romance

Renowned for picturesque cherry blossom displays, Yeojwacheon Stream is a haven in Jinhae. The stream is adorned with 13 bridges, providing an optimal location for photo enthusiasts. These bridges gained prominence as ‘romance bridges’ after they were featured in the popular MBC drama “Romance”.

Although the stream area near the entrance gets crowded during the festival, the crowd thins out towards the last bridge, offering a more private setting for those perfect Instagram-worthy photos.

Gyeonghwa Station: Breathtaking Colors against Cherry Blossoms

Another impressive spot is Gyeonghwa Station, an inactive train station that captivates visitors with its two nostalgia-filled train locomotives and cars on the tracks. The mesmerizing contrast between the vibrant Korail locomotive and the blush cherry blossoms is awe-inspiring.

To avoid the crowd and get the best experience, consider visiting the station early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Gyeonghwa Station’s picturesque appeal has also been showcased in several Korean dramas and movies like ‘Spring Waltz’ and ‘Boy Goes to Heaven’.

Important: For those planning a visit, kindly note that this is not Jinhae station. There is often confusion between the two.

The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), a strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula that serves as a buffer zone between North and South Korea, is a popular attraction among tourists visiting South Korea. This zone, known for its historical significance and unique biodiversity, extends all the way from the west coast of Incheon to the eastern mountain range of Gangwon-do, covering a total distance of 250 kilometers.

This article presents a comprehensive guide to exploring the DMZ, detailing the must-see sights, the best tour options available, and many other valuable tips to enhance your travel experience.

Places To Visit

The most renowned DMZ sights are located in Paju, a city bordering North Korea. These include the Third Infiltration Tunnel, the Dorasan Observatory, and the Dora Station. The Third Infiltration Tunnel, discovered in 1978, offers a firsthand experience of the tense relationship between the two Koreas. The Dorasan Observatory, on the other hand, allows visitors a rare glimpse of North Korean lands. The Dora Station, once a bustling railway station connecting the two Koreas, stands today as a symbol of hope for reunification.

However, a trip to the DMZ isn’t confined to the city of Paju, but boasts of notable sights beyond this city. Across the length of the DMZ, one can discover various sites illuminating the historical and natural richness of the Korean Peninsula, like Incheon’s Ganghwa Peace Observatory or Gangwon-do’s Cheorwon area.

DMZ Tours in Korea

A tour is undoubtedly the best way for travelers to take in the sights of the DMZ. Not only do these tours provide knowledgeable guides who can offer historical context, but they also handle logistical considerations making the experience hassle-free. According to travelers’ reviews and experience, Company X offers one of the most comprehensive and informative tours.

Travel Tips

For an enhanced and informed experience, it’s best to:

Dress appropriately for weather conditions as some parts of the tour take place outdoors.

Follow all safety rules and guidelines provided by the tour operators.

In conclusion, this full guide aims to ensure that tourists visiting the DMZ not only explore the popular spots but also discover the less-known areas for a truly enriching experience.

The DMZ: A Vital Peace-Preserving Buffer

Standing as a stark symbol of division, the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) functions as a crucial conflict-deterrence zone between the two Koreas – North and South. Stretching the width of the Korean peninsula – approximately 250 kilometers long – and possessing a mean width of 4 kilometres, the DMZ effectively bisects the peninsula into two distinct geopolitical entities. Although it’s a patch of unrest, this stretch of land acts as a buffer safeguarding both nations from any chances of inadvertent military escalations.

The genesis of the DMZ dates back to 1953, following the Korean War, encapsulating over six decades of fraught standoff. Imposed by the Korean Armistice Agreement, it’s not just a simple borderline but a de facto 2.5 miles of weapon-free buffer zone enveloping the actual military demarcation line. Despite its unsettling connotations, ironically, this area has transformed into an inadvertent animal sanctuary nurturing a rich ecosystem due to human absence, earning it the nickname – “Accidental Paradise.“

Inside the liminal DMZ is a neutral ground known as the Joint Security Area (JSA). In this conciliatory space, leaders from North and South Korea occasionally meet for negotiation talks, echoing the constant quest for diplomatic solutions between the two nations.

Formation Date: 27th July 1953

Location: Korean Peninsula

Length: Approximately 250 kilometers

Width: Roughly 4 kilometers

Purpose: To serve as a buffer zone preventing accidental warfare and armed confrontations

Notable Area: Joint Security Area (JSA), a neutral ground for inter-Korean meetings

Ecological Significance: Due to human absence, the DMZ has unknowingly evolved into a safe refuge for diverse wildlife, dubbed as the “Accidental Paradise.”

Overall, the DMZ’s existence underscores the complex history of the Korean peninsula and stands as a testament to escalating tensions and potential reconciliation between North and South Korea.

DMZ Places To Visit In Gangwon-do

The DMZ, or Demilitarized Zone, is a roughly 250 kilometers long area that extends through the provinces of Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do. The region hosts a unique mixture of historical sites related to the tumultuous history of the Korean peninsula and extraordinary natural beauty.

While Paju in Gyeonggi-do province offers some renowned DMZ experiences, this guide focuses on the numerous intriguing spots to visit in Gangwon-do province. These sites can primarily be reached by car or public transport as guided tours to this area are sparse.

Please be cognizant that most places in this list are located within security zones and require advanced reservations. Ensure to visit their respective websites to make your trip as smooth as possible.

Travel Tips

When planning to enjoy the beauty and serenity of Maehwa flowers, here are some key points to consider:

Reviewing the official website and recent Instagram posts: Due to yearly variations in weather conditions, the blossoming stage of Maehwa flowers can change. Some years, strong winds lead to earlier shedding of the flowers. Thus, it’s advisable to check the latest updates regarding the bloom condition on Instagram or the official website before planning your visit.

Visiting during non-peak hours: To fully enjoy the tranquility and capture the best photos, it is recommended to plan your visit either on weekdays or early in the morning as these are generally less crowded times.

Advance booking for package tours: If you’re aiming to explore the region with a package tour from Seoul, remember these tours are in high demand, especially during the flowering season. Thus, it’s beneficial to book weeks in advance to secure a spot and avoid last-minute disappointment.

Contrasting clothing for photographs: Wearing bright-colored clothing can result in stunning photographs when set against the backdrop of white Maehwa flowers. It brings about a rich contrast that dramatically enhances your pictures.

These tips will allow you to plan a hassle-free visit and make the most out of your Maehwa flower viewing experience.

Planning to escape the hustle and bustle of the city during the weekend? Yeongyang Traditional Hanok Doodle Village might be the ideal retreat you need. Dotingly named the ‘village on a hill’, this relaxing idyll is located on the eastern side of Andong, relatively unspoiled by mass tourism, making it all the more attractive for inner peace seekers.

Established in 1640, Yeongyang Traditional Hanok Doodle Village has a rich history. It was a refuge for Lee Sim-yeong during the 2nd Manchu invasion in Korea. After the invasion, his descendants further developed the village, preserving many cultural heritages including ancient houses. The village is also famous for the memorial stone for Madam Jang’s cookbook, the first cookbook authored by a woman in East Asia. The village has been classified as a cultural village since 1994.

Comfortable and Cozy Stay

Our arrival at the village was around 9 PM on a Saturday. It was bitterly cold outside (4°C), so we directly headed to our Hanok room. I must admit, spending the night at a Traditional Hanok was a unique experience. The charm of ancient traditions seamlessly blended with modern amenities like an attached bathroom, floor heating, and a TV. Other parts of the village also offer WiFi access, although it’s not available in the rooms.

Timehood Feast: Traditional Korean Breakfast

Next day, we started our morning with a traditional Korean breakfast- a satisfying spread of seaweed soup, rice, mackerel, and other side dishes. The restaurant owner personified the essence of a warm Korean mother, making the meal more homely and touching.

Learn to Make Rice Cakes

Post breakfast, we got our hands on cooking rice cakes! It’s a delightful way the village is trying to preserve the legacy and recipes of Madame Jang. The village houses a large kitchen where at least 40 people can comfortably learn cooking. The rice cakes here stand out from the regular Korean ones found in the traditional markets. They are uniquely made by steaming rice flour and finished off with pine nuts.

A Traditional Lunch Feast à la Madame Jang

The weekend getaway concluded with a delightful traditional lunch, prepared just the way Madame Jang herself used to. It was a feast for the senses, meticulously prepared, sumptuous, and wholesome!

The Yeongyang Traditional Hanok Doodle Village offers much more than just relaxation. You can enrich your stay by going for a stroll or a bike trip to marvel at the natural sceneries. It’s also a perfect place for artists and writers to spend some quiet time sketching or writing.

To reach this tranquil paradise, you can catch an express bus from Dong Seoul bus terminal to Yeongyang, a trip of approximately 4.5 hours that would cost around 20,000 Won. Alternatively, you could take an express bus from Andong, which should take you about an hour. From Yeongyang bus terminal, hop on a direct bus (감천-주남초교입구) leading to the Yeongyang Traditional Hanok Doodle Village. Alight at the bus stop 진막골 (Jin Maggol) and it’s just a 10-minute walk to the village entrance.

Return to your busy work routine or city life rejuvenated after spending a refreshing break at the Yeongyang Traditional Hanok Doodle Village.

The Taehwa River is a prominent landmark that adds a unique charm to Ulsan. Flowing from east to west, the river spans a length of 48 km and connects two mountains – Gijisan Mountain and Baeksunsan Mountain, stretching all the way to Ulsan Bay.

A remarkable feature of the river is the Sipridaebatgyo bridge; a tribute to Ulsan’s unique symbols – the white heron and the whale. The bridge stands as a representation of the symbols of Ulsan. Ulsan city holds the distinction of being the only urban area in Korea that attracts a huge migration of white herons each summer (estimated to be around 6000). The city’s other emblem, the whale (also known as haewuri) symbolizes both the sun and sea, embodying the vibrancy of Ulsan city.

Located between the Taekwa and Samho bridges is the 4 km long Taehwagang Simnidaebat – a bamboo field which was initially developed during the Japanese colonial period. This bamboo field was conceived as a means to curb the frequent flooding.

The river’s side is also the location of several facilities that encourage physical activity and leisure. ‘Typical Korean’ exercise facilities, scenic walking trails, and grass fields ideal for picnics or relaxation can be found here. A line of food trucks offering local and international cuisine makes this a favourite spot for Ulsan citizens for a weekend break or an after-work cool down.

Drinking Water Safety and Availability in Korea

Updated and Comprehensive Guide to Visiting Korea

When planning a trip to South Korea, it’s essential to familiarise yourself with the local customs, rules and needed accessories for the best possible experience. Here are some indispensable points that you should consider:

Tipping Policy: Unlike other countries, South Korea follows a no tipping culture. The concept of leaving extra money for services in restaurants, cafes or hotels is not typical here. Except for situations like a trip with a tour guide or taking a taxi, tipping is not customary. In fact, at traditional establishments or age-old restaurants, tipping may even be considered disrespectful. Therefore, always remember this important cultural distinction when visiting South Korea.

Power Adapters: Power sockets differ across the world, and thus what works in your country might not necessarily work in South Korea. Specifically, for travellers from regions like the US, UK, South East Asia, and Japan, it’s advisable to pack a travel adapter compatible with Korean sockets. Korean power outlets are of type F, the same as those in mainland Europe, which have two round pins. Confirming your gadgets and appliances will work overseas can save a lot of hassle upon arrival.

Planning Your Visit: It’s always better to have a well-laid plan instead of exploring aimlessly. To make the most out of your visit, browse through these suggested Korea itineraries. From cultural experiences, food journeys, historical visits to scenic beauty, these itineraries cover an array of activities that cater to various interests and preferences.

Water In Korea: An Updated Practical Guide

Whether you’re visiting Korea soon or planning on staying for a longer period, you might have questions about the drinking water situation in the country. Rest at ease, knowing there are numerous safe and dependable choices at your disposal. Here’s an updated guide on drinking water options in Korea, including tap water, bottled water, and purified water.

1. Tap Water In Korea

Is the tap water in South Korea drinkable? Undeniably YES. The country boasts of a reliable water infrastructure, and the purification protocols are meticulously upheld. Known for its high quality, the tap water in South Korea is generally safe and should not cause any stomach issues.

The South Korean government is committed to ensuring clean water access by conducting routine replacements of old pipelines across Seoul and other regions. As of now, 95% of the old water pipes in Seoul have been replaced, and the remaining 5% were replaced by 2020. Since 2003, when Korea ranked 8th in the United Nations worldwide water quality report, the quality of water has significantly improved. For this reason, it’s highly advisable to bring a reusable bottle when visiting South Korea.

Important to remember: If your accommodation happens to be in an older building, the tap water might initially appear slightly brown due to old pipes within the building. In this case, opting for bottled water is recommended. However, there should be no such issues in modern and newly-constructed hotels.

1.1 Tap Water In Seoul

In the capital city, Seoul, the Office of Waterworks, popularly known as Arisu (acclaimed by the UN), diligently oversees the water quality 24/7. During the day, regular water quality checks are performed covering 147 indicators at five water intake points. If you’re interested in learning more about the purification process, Arisu features its own Waterworks Museum, which offers insights into the history and evolution of clean water in Korea. Further details available here.

2. Bottled Water In Korea

Despite the high-quality tap water, the popular preference in Korea still leans towards bottled water or water from a home purification system. The belief is that these options are healthier than tap water, and repeated public campaigning to promote tap water hasn’t managed to change this perception. The bottle water industry, consequently, is thriving, with projected earnings of about 1 trillion won by 2020.

Once you visit any supermarket, you’ll come across more than 20 different brands of bottled water varying in price from 500 won to 2000 won per bottle. The most renowned brand is Jeju Samdasoo, renowned for being the only volcanic bedrock water in South Korea. Budget-friendly brands such as Bongpyeong Spring Water and Blue from E-mart sell for about 470 won per 2 liters. It’s noteworthy to know that many brands source their water from the same location, implying that under different labels and prices, you could be buying ‘identical’ water.

Environmentally-friendly tip: Opt for a reusable bottle as opposed to purchasing bottled water. This simple step reduces plastic waste significantly. If you’re uneasy about drinking tap water, water purifier machines found at almost any museum, restaurant, and public building would let you refill your reusable bottle.

3. Purified Water

Majority of Korean households use a purifying machine that cleanses tap water, and such machines are ubiquitous in public establishments including museums, restaurants, and government buildings. Feel free to refill your bottle at these locations.

Note: In several restaurants, water service is self-serve. If you observe a filtered water machine accompanied by cups, it’s implied that diners are expected to help themselves to water.

Top Travel Water Bottles for Your Visit to South Korea

Not only is this more eco-friendly, but it’s also significantly more convenient. You can easily refill your water bottle, either directly from the tap or from various purifier machines that can be found in virtually all public spaces. They are also significantly more resistant to corrosion, rust, and bacteria than their plastic counterparts, making them a much safer option for storing your beverages.
3. Horse Riding Adventure

The farm provides several horse riding options at the on-site equestrian center. The most sought-after experience is a brief horse riding adventure priced at 8000 krw. Here, participants can ride around the equestrian center on horseback, led by a guide.

For a more immersive experience, participants can opt for a 45-minute (or longer) riding lesson, where they learn the basics of horse riding and techniques. Advance booking is mandatory, and instructions are primarily in Korean.

4. Dog Paradise – A Playground for Pets

The farmland also caters to your furry friends, offering Dog Paradise—an expansive playground specially designed to suit dogs of all sizes. Entry costs 4000 krw, but additional fees are levied for using the pool and professional drying services.

5. Exploring on A Four-Wheeled Bicycle

Covering more ground is easy, thanks to four-wheeled bicycle rentals. Ideally suited for families with small kids or elderly members, these family bikes come in two sizes. A small bike for 2-3 people costs 12 000 krw while the larger version, accommodating up to 6 people, is priced at 20 000 krw.

6. Archery Experience

The farmland boasts of a small archery zone where for 5000 krw, visitors can test their aim with a bow and arrows, shooting at targets set about 7 meters away.

7. Other Activities

On top of the aforementioned experiences, Anseong Farmland also houses numerous theme park rides and trampolines. There’s something fun and engaging for every kid (and those young at heart) at the farmland.

Updated Personal Experience

My visit to the Anseong Farmland was an absolute delight! I had the wonderful opportunity to travel there on the 19th of October. It was a day bathed in sunlight that not only magnified the beauty of the farmland but also made the experience exceptionally joyous. The vibrant, blooming flowers spread a colorful blanket that further enhanced the overall mesmerizing view.

A strategic decision of my visit was arriving early at the farmland, around 9:30 AM. This was helpful in avoiding the bustling crowd that usually floods in later. From this, I can certainly suggest that if you are planning a visit, aim for a weekday or early mornings during weekends for a serene and relaxed experience.

However, one thing I would reconsider if I were to revisit would be my mode of transport. Rather than taking public transportation, I’d prefer a package tour. Taking an express bus to the terminal – located nearly 5 kilometers from the farmland – was straightforward, but the rest of the journey was a bit convoluted.

My initial journey involved taking a Kakao Taxi after reaching the bus terminal as there was a long wait for the next bus. The taxi fare was somewhat reasonable, around 9000 KRW, but considering the wait time, taking a taxi seemed more convenient.

During my return, I opted for the shuttle bus to get back to the bus terminal. However, I had to endure a considerable wait time again – about 1.5 hours – for my bus. Therefore, I would suggest booking a package tour to reach the Farmland in order to bypass these potential inconveniences.

Regarding the dining options, although there is a wide choice available – from restaurants to street-food carts and cafes spread all over the grounds, I personally did not find the cuisine much to my taste. Hence, I chose not to eat there. However, for food lovers, there’s an extensive assortment of dishes to savor and appreciate in the refreshing aura of Anseong Farmland.

In summary, Anseong Farmland provides an engaging and captivating experience filled with splendid sights, though I’d recommend well-planned transport and considering your culinary preferences before you head there.
