2. Soo Hyuk Lee (이수혁)

Next on our list is the popular actor/model, Lee Soo Hyuk. He first debuted as a model in 2006 and soon after became popular with the designers because of his thin body and pale skin (giving him a distinct look).

6. Ki Yong Jang (장기용)

Born in 1992, Ulsan, Jang Ki Yong is a South Korean model and actor. The story goes that he was inspired to become a model after seeing runway videos of Lee Soo Hyuk inspiring him to pursue the study of modelling and acting in university. He began his modelling career in 2012.

When he started modeling, he was known for a boy-like image which he feared would prevent him from succeeding in the career. In the following years, he’s worked hard at attaining a versatile image and has become a capable model. 

In 2014, he debuted as an actor in the popular K-drama “It’s Okay, It’s Love” and has continued to appear on the small screen ever since.

7. Noma Han (노마)

Noma is another internationally active male Korean model. He carries a bad-boy type image and has worked with many Korean and foreign brands such as Calvin Klein Jeans, Jill Stuart, Kenneth Cole, Lane Crawford, Able Jeans, Tommy Hilfiger Denim, Kenzo, Lacoste, Public School, and Dolce & Gabbana.

9. Xu Meen (수민)

You might not have guessed that he is Korean by looking at the romanization of his name, but Xu Meen is a Korean male model who is ranking in the top 50 list of Models.com. The story goes that he was cast on the street by a passing fashion director. Xu Meen debuted as a model abroad and has become known for his unique look. In the international scene, he is admired for his enigmatic androgynous beauty. 

He’s worked with clients such as Lanvin, Kenzo, Boss, Moncler, and Louis Vuitton. Louis Vuitton has also modelled mannequins for its stores all over the world after Xu Meen’s body. 

10. Jae Hyung Ahn (안재형)

11. Seung Chan Lee (이승찬)

Seung Chan Lee first debuted as a model in Korea in 2015 however he was not able to become fully active until 2019. After building his career in Korea, he finally debuted internationally in 2020. He’s described as a model with a “baby face” and clear light-coloured skin. He has worked with clients such as Givenchy, Kenzo, Fendi, Dolce & Gabbana, and Wooyoungmi.

Much like his image, he is a kind and polite young man who is both grateful towards the other Korean models who have paved the path and he wishes to work hard and further improve the recognition of Korean models in the international scene. 

12. Chil Du Kim (김칠두)

We could not finish this list without mentioning Chil Du Kim. He began modelling in 2016 and soon caught everyone’s attention with his unique style, confident presence, and amazing facial hair.

Korea has strict social norms when it comes to aging and how people of different ages should live. This has led to many senior actors and models becoming invisible as they age.

But recently, thanks to the handsome presence of new senior public figures such as Chil Du Kim, there has been a push towards age positivity.

So, what is Korean street fashion? Generally speaking, most streetwear is oversized, comfortable, and often contains large logos or sayings. Street fashion differs per neighborhood. Most often, three distinct types of Korean street fashion are named: Hongdae street fashion, Ewha Street Fashion, and Retro Street Fashion.

Hongdae street fashion can best be described as oversized, unisex, and chunky. Big hoodies and t-shirts, one-size-fits-all (boys and girls!), huge logos, and a lot of black characterize this style. 

Ewha Street Fashion is characterized by soft, comfy, but elegant clothing. It is less “tough”-looking than Hongdae Street Fashion, and has softer lines and more form-fitting clothes. Think of dresses combined with oversized sweaters and shirts.

Retro street fashion borrows a lot of patterns and styles from the 80s and 90s in Korea. This means bold colors, simple t-shirts without too many logos, and sometimes even shoulder pads.

As you can see, Korean street fashion contains a lot of oversized clothing. The oversized style in Korea is very diverse. Oversized tops – like hoodies, sweaters, and t-shirts – can be matched with baggy pants or jeans for a tough, casual look. First up, we have oversized t-shirts. These are a basic item and a must-have in every closet. Some oversized t-shirts have thin fabric – like cotton – and are very flowy, which makes them a little more form-fitting. Other oversized t-shirts are made of a stiffer fabric, which allows for them to keep their oversized shape well. You can wear oversized t-shirts with some skinny jeans, baggy jeans, tucked into a skirt, or under a dress with thin straps.

What Is Korean Street Fashion?

It is impossible to characterize Korean street fashion in just a few words, but generally speaking, most streetwear is chunky, comfortable, and often contains large logos or sayings. Sometimes it combines streetwear-style clothing – like sweaters, hoodies, and sneakers – with traditional Korean imagery. 

It is also important to understand that street fashion differs per neighborhood. Most often, three distinct types of Korean street fashion are named: Hongdae street fashion, Ewha Street Fashion, and Retro Street Fashion.

1. Hongdae Street Fashion

Hongdae University district is the place-to-be for the best nightlife in Seoul. No wonder it has some of the most vibrant street fashion vibes as well. Hongdae University is well-known for its great cultural and art programs, so a lot of artists and designers have come from this area. Combine this artsy side with the university-inspired nightlife, and you get Hongdae Street Fashion.

Streetwear in Hongdae can best be described as oversized, unisex, and chunky. Big hoodies and t-shirts, one-size-fits-all (boys and girls!), huge logos, and a lot of black characterize this style. Think of little fisherman beanies, big sneakers, and tight pants. Hongdae Street Fashion is also very popular among K-pop stars, such as Lisa from Black Pink, Jessi from JYP, and Hwasa from Mamamoo.

2. Ewha Street Fashion

Ewha Women’s University is an all-girls university and thus Ewha street fashion is a lot more soft and girly than Hongdae Street Fashion. The streets around Ewha University are lined with little shops where you can find the characteristic “schoolgirl” look.

Ewha Street Fashion is characterized by soft, comfy, but elegant clothing. It is perfect for attending classes, but could even be worn as a casual office outfit. It is less “tough”-looking than Hongdae Street Fashion, and has softer lines and more form-fitting clothes. Think of dresses combined with oversized Korean sweaters. This style was made famous by Girls’ Generation and Twice.

3. Retro Street Fashion

Retro fashion is popular all over the globe these days and Korea is no exception. Retro street fashion borrows a lot of patterns and styles from the 80s and 90s in Korea. This means bold colors, simple t-shirts without too many logos, and sometimes even shoulder pads. This kind of street style is often combined with Hongdae Street Fashion or Ewha Street Fashion.

The sneakers go great with the comfortable sweatshirt-and-oversized-trousers look. The boots also look very cute when combined with short skirts. 

6. High Waist Trousers

Currently, Korean street fashion combines oversized tops and sweaters with high waist trousers. Often, the tops are tucked in at the front and are hanging loose at the back. The high-waisted trousers (or skirts!) create a nice silhouette. The trousers are often a little wider, but it is also common – for guys and girls – to wear high waist skinny jeans and an oversized sweater.

7. Knitted Sweaters

Knitted sweaters are more Ewha-style street fashion. They are very soft and comfortable and perfect for when you are studying for the entire day. The soft, knitted sweaters are often combined with cute mini skirts, and are worn over dresses for warmth.

8. Mini Skirts

Mini skirts are an integral part of Ewha street fashion, although you also see them in Hongdae street fashion. On the streets around Ewha, mini skirts are often sold in girly colors and combined with soft sweaters or tops and cute shoes. In Hongdae, mini skirts are often offset against chunky, oversized sweaters and boots.

9. Socks

If you think socks are supposed to be worn inside your shoes, only for you to see, think again. Socks are a huge part of Korean street fashion. Koreans often pull their socks up high and combine it with a short skirt or cropped pants, to show off the socks. Lianox also sells these cool tennis socks. Lee Dong Wook, born in Seoul on November 6, 1981 is a South Korean actor, host, model and entertainer. He is most famous for his roles in My Girl (2005), Scent of a Woman (2011), Hotel King (2014), Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2016–2017), Life (2018) and Touch Your Heart (2019). 10. Ju Ji hoon (주지훈)

Ju Ji Hoon, born in Seoul on May 16, 1982, is a famous Korean actor and model. He is known for his roles in The Devil, Antique, Mask, Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds, The Spy Gone North, Dark Figure of Crime and Kingdom. His first leading role was back in 2006 in the Korean hit drama Princess Hours.

He has modelled for big companies like Calvin Klein, Levi’s” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow”>Levi’s. Ji Hoon even won multiple awards for his modelling work, like ‘Best Male Model’ and ‘Most Stylish Male Model’.

There are some controversies around Ju Ji Hoon as he was arrested for drug use in Korea. He received a sentence of six months in jail, was suspended for one year, had to do 120 hours of community service, and received a fine of 360 000 krw.

11. Extra: Kim Hyun Joong (김현중)

As many people in the comment section mentioned that Kim Hyun Joong needs to be added to this list, we decided to add him as a bonus. He is a Korean singer (from the band SS501), actor and songwriter. His most popular performances are in the Korean dramas Boys Over Flowers and Playful Kiss.

He’s considered one of the biggest Hallyu stars from the early 2010s.

When History, Culture And Fashion Meets

I was really looking forward to receiving my KORELIMITED delivery and as I knew I would love it and nothing was less true. I’m absolutely in love with all the items. The fitting, the quality and designs are just superb. The 4 items I got are the beige respect hoodie, the concrete March 1st tee, the army green Corea 1900 pullover windbreaker and the orange Corea Beanie. Below you’ll find an in depth review of each item.

1. Beige Respect Hoodie

Have you watched the Oscar winning Parasite movie by Bong Joon-ho? Then you’ll definitely recognise the print on the back of this hoodie. I’ve been a fan of Bong Joon-ho since his movie Snowpiercer was released in 2013. He is probably one of the greatest Korean film makers and all the awards he won in the past year can confirm this.

The front of the hoodie says 리스펙트 (Respect), which refers to the scene where the man of the basemen gets stabbed but still shouts “Respect, Mr. Park”.

2. Concrete March 1st Tee

March 1st is a very important date for everyone in Korea and every year there are huge processions going through the streets of Seoul to remember this day. The first of March movement was one of the earliest displays of the Korean resistance against the Japanese during occupation times. As I’m a huge fan of Korean history, I got really excited to see this shirt in the store. One of the biggest sites of the Japanese Occupations that is still remaining in Seoul is Seodaemun Prison Hall, in there you can see the pictures of all the prisoners, just like on this t-shirt. One of the people on the t-shirt is the famous Yu In-seok, a 18 university student who led the 1st of March Movement.

3. Army Green Corea 1900 Pullover Windbreaker

Absolutely love this windbreaker. I have been wearing it every time I go outside since I got it. It is perfect for spring season in South Korea. It’s a pretty thin material but very comfortable. On the back of the windbreaker, the Korean flag patterns are printed, but one of the trigrams is replaced with a hand print. The hand print belongs to Ahn Jung Geun, who was an important activist during the Japanese Occupation. He, together with other freedom fighters, cut off parts of his finger and used his blood to write on the Korean flag.

Final Review
